ADB's East Asia region comprises only two countries, the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Mongolia, which are a study in contrasts. The PRC has the world's largest population, and is the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, mainly from heavy industry and energy production. Mongolia has the lowest population density of all ADB's developing member countries, and 30% of its emissions are from raising livestock. East Asia's economic and industrial expansion, especially in the PRC, has significantly reduced poverty in the region. But this progress comes at a price
